Rising sign traits: what all 12 ascendants say about you

Rising sign traits for all 12 ascendants, grouped by element: first impressions, style and growth notes, plus which rising signs are most common.

Three Aura screens fanned on black: an Insights screen with an Emotional Profile chart and a Sagittarius Energy chart, a Today's Zodiac Insight for Sagittarius with a glowing archer symbol over pink and violet clouds, and a Your Birth Chart list of placements from Sun to Saturn above a Birth Chart Analysis

Your rising sign, or ascendant, is said to shape your first impression: the manner people meet before they really know you. Fire risers come across warm and direct, earth risers calm and composed, air risers sociable and curious, and water risers gentle but guarded. These are readings from astrological tradition, not scientific findings.

In short, your rising sign is the zodiac sign that was on the eastern horizon when you were born, so finding it takes an exact birth time and place. Our guide to sun, moon and rising signs covers those basics. Below are all twelve ascendants by element, from the zodiac side of Aura, our iPhone app for mood journaling, aura colors and astrology.

What do the 12 rising signs say about you?

In astrology, each rising sign describes a different outward manner: how you enter a room, how strangers read you and the style you fall back on before you feel at ease. Astrologers treat the ascendant as the front door of the birth chart. The reference entry on the ascendant says it is concerned with how a person has learned to present themself to the world, especially in public and in impersonal situations. Each rising sign takes much of its tone from its element. Fire risers (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) are read as friendly and direct. Earth risers (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) seem calm, reserved and hard to rattle. Air risers (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) come across as sociable but a little detached. Water risers (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) are said to hide their true feelings at first. Your sun and moon signs then fill in what sits behind that first impression.

The ruler column uses the traditional rulers from the entry on domicile in astrology; many modern astrologers add Pluto for Scorpio, Uranus for Aquarius and Neptune for Pisces.

Astrologers also weigh three things that change how a rising sign shows up:

  • The chart ruler. The planet ruling your rising sign is said to set the tone for the chart.
  • Planets near the ascendant. The closest one, especially in the first house, is called the rising planet.
  • The mode. Cardinal risers show initiative, fixed risers steadiness, mutable risers adaptability.

What are Aries, Leo and Sagittarius rising like?

Fire rising signs are read as warm and confident. The ascendant entry says a fire riser's outer manner is friendly, uncritical and non-hostile.

Aries rising

Aries rising arrives first and says what it thinks: quick movements, a direct gaze, little small talk. One traditional source describes a well-organized, slightly stern bearing; modern readings stress candor and competitiveness. The growth edge is patience, since Aries risers are said to start more than they finish.

Leo rising

Leo rising gets noticed. Tradition gives it a dignified, rather formal manner that inspires confidence, and modern astrologers add warmth and a bold, polished style. The catch? Leo risers can feel they must always perform.

Sagittarius rising

Sagittarius rising makes friends in queues. The traditional picture is a cheerful, pleasant and rather witty manner, with a casual style built for movement. Its growth note is follow-through, because restlessness can make commitments feel like fences.

What are Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn rising like?

Earth rising signs are read as steady. The ascendant entry calls earth risers reserved and collected, slow to show emotion and sometimes seeming cool, with Taurus showing this least.

Taurus rising

Taurus rising feels unhurried, and people relax around it. Venus rules Taurus, so astrologers link this riser to comfort, soft fabrics and an eye for what feels good. Where can it grow? In flexibility, since Taurus risers are said to dig in when pushed.

Virgo rising

Virgo rising notices everything and mentions some of it. Strangers read it as neat, alert and capable. The growth note is self-kindness, because Virgo risers aim their high standards at themselves first.

Capricorn rising

Capricorn rising looks like it has done this before: serious, polite and composed, sometimes read as older than its years. Style leans classic. The growth note is softness, because Capricorn risers can hide warmth behind competence.

What are Gemini, Libra and Aquarius rising like?

Air rising signs are read as sociable and curious. The ascendant entry describes air risers as friendly but also independent and somewhat detached: easy to meet, harder to know.

Gemini rising

Gemini rising always seems to have three conversations going. Tradition pictures a riser constantly busy, juggling at least a dozen activities at once. Mercury rules Gemini, so astrologers expect quick wit. The growth note is depth: fewer projects, held for longer.

Libra rising

Libra rising makes a room feel easier. Ruled by Venus, it's read as charming and polite, with a sense of balance in clothes and conversation. The growth note is directness, since Libra risers smooth things over until their own opinion goes missing.

Aquarius rising

Aquarius rising is friendly with everyone and close to few: open, a little unusual, hard to predict. Tradition credits it with making wonderful plans, for itself or others, and sometimes even carrying some out. Its growth note is letting people past the friendly surface.

What are Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces rising like?

Water rising signs are read as perceptive and self-protective. The ascendant entry says water risers hide their true feelings, and what you see is often not what you get. For the emotional layer itself, see our guide to moon sign meaning.

Cancer rising

Cancer rising comes across as kind and easy to confide in. Tradition says Cancer risers appear chatty and helpful and do well where tact is needed. Underneath sits a protective shell. The growth note is reading other people's moods without carrying them all home.

Scorpio rising

Scorpio rising is hard to read, and people notice. It reads as intense: a steady gaze, few wasted words, real privacy. Tradition says these risers use many kinds of camouflage with strangers. The growth note is letting new people in sooner.

Pisces rising

Pisces rising seems soft, gentle and a little dreamy. Tradition warns that this can look almost helpless, and that the look is misleading: Pisces risers fight hard for what they believe is right. Style tends to be fluid. The growth note is boundaries.

Which rising signs are most common, and which are rare?

In the northern hemisphere, Cancer through Sagittarius are likely the most common rising signs, and Pisces and Aries the rarest. The reason is astronomy, not astrology. Because Earth's axis is tilted, the signs take unequal times to cross the eastern horizon, and the longer a sign takes to rise, the more births it can cover.

In theory each sign rises in two hours. The ascendant entry gives real ascension times at three latitudes:

Rising signsParis, FranceSt. Petersburg, RussiaConcepción, Chile
Pisces and Aries1 h35 min2 h 30 min
Aquarius and Taurus1 h 15 min45 min2 h 25 min
Capricorn and Gemini1 h 50 min1 h 25 min2 h 15 min
Cancer and Sagittarius2 h 30 min2 h 40 min2 h
Leo and Scorpio2 h 40 min3 h 15 min1 h 35 min
Virgo and Libra2 h 45 min3 h 20 min1 h 15 min

At the latitude of Paris, Virgo spends 2 hours 45 minutes of every day rising and Pisces just 1 hour. If births were spread evenly around the clock, Virgo rising would turn up nearly three times as often. Births aren't perfectly even, so treat this as reasoning, not a count. In the southern hemisphere the order flips.

Does your rising sign change how you look?

There's no evidence that it does. In astrological tradition the ascendant is said to signify physical appearance, as its reference entry notes, but we found no study that supports the idea.

In 1985, Nature published Shawn Carlson's A double-blind test of astrology, in which astrologers tried to match natal charts to personality profiles from a psychological questionnaire. The summary of astrology and science reports that they did no better than chance. That test was about personality, not faces, but if charts can't pick out a personality, there's little reason to expect them to predict looks.

So what is a rising sign good for? It gives you words for how you come across. Ask two friends for their honest first impression of you and compare it with your rising sign.

FAQ

What is the most common rising sign?

In the northern hemisphere, likely Virgo and Libra, because they take the longest to cross the horizon: about 2 hours 45 minutes each at the latitude of Paris. Leo and Scorpio follow. This is reasoning from rising times, not a census of birth charts.

Which rising sign is the rarest?

In the northern hemisphere, Pisces and Aries, which rise in about an hour at the latitude of Paris and in 35 minutes at St. Petersburg. In the southern hemisphere the order reverses, and Virgo and Libra rise fastest.

Can your rising sign be the same as your sun sign?

Yes. It happens when you're born around sunrise, because the sun is then on the eastern horizon. People often call this a "double" placement, as in double Leo, read as an outward manner that matches the core self.

Does your rising sign matter more after 30?

Tradition tends to say the opposite. The ascendant entry mentions a theory that people grow more like their sun sign after about age 29, as they gain confidence and need a public face less. Like the rest of astrology, it has no scientific support.
