Bloemenmarkt
The Bloemenmarkt lies along the Singel canal between Muntplein and Koningsplein, in the southern part of Amsterdam's canal belt. Founded in 1862, it is often described as the world's only floating flower market, because its stalls stand on barges. In the market's early years, plants and flowers were brought in by boat along the canals; today they arrive by road and the barges are permanently moored. Over time the market has shifted towards visitors: most of its roughly fifteen stalls now sell bulbs, souvenirs and tulip-themed goods, and only a few still sell fresh cut flowers.
- Founded in 1862 on the Singel, between Muntplein and Koningsplein.
- The stalls stand on barges that are now permanently anchored; flowers once arrived by canal and now come by land.
- Of about 15 shops, only a few still sell fresh flowers; most sell bulbs and tulip-related souvenirs.
