The city

Marché aux fleurs Reine-Elizabeth-II

The Marché aux fleurs Reine-Elizabeth-II occupies Place Louis-Lépine on the Île de la Cité. A decree of Napoleon I in 1808 gave the site to the city for its flower market, which opened in 1809. Florists trade every day from low iron pavilions with glass roofs. Long known as the flower and bird market, it was renamed in June 2014 during a state visit by Queen Elizabeth II. In 2021 the Paris council voted to end sales of live animals, including the market's birds. A phased restoration of the pavilions, approved in 2024, is due to finish in 2028, with the market's fifteen florists trading throughout.

  • Created by a decree of Napoleon I of 21 January 1808; inaugurated on 16 August 1809.
  • Renamed Marché aux fleurs Reine-Elizabeth-II on 7 June 2014, during Queen Elizabeth II's state visit to France.
  • The Paris council voted on 3 February 2021 to end live animal sales, including the Sunday bird market.
  • Restoration of the halls, approved on 26 March 2024, runs in phases from autumn 2025 to 2028; the 15 florists keep trading.
