Flowers in Osaka
Osaka's best-known flower tradition is the Japan Mint's cherry blossom walkthrough, Sakura no Torinuke. It began in 1883, when Mint director Kinsuke Endo decided the trees should not be enjoyed by employees alone and opened the grounds to the public. Each year, for about seven days in mid-April, visitors follow a 560-metre one-way path along the old Yodo River past more than 130 cherry varieties, mostly late-blooming double-flowered types, and one variety is named flower of the year. The city also hosted Expo '90, the International Garden and Greenery Exposition, at Tsurumi Ryokuchi, which drew more than 23 million visitors; the site is now the Flower Expo Commemorative Park.
