The city
Flowers in Birmingham
Birmingham has no well-known dedicated flower market. Flowers have long been sold around the Bull Ring, the city's historic market area. In the Victorian era, immigrant traders there set up as flower-sellers and umbrella vendors, and an outdoor market with 150 stalls opened in the rebuilt Bull Ring in 1962. The city's main documented garden tradition is Birmingham Botanical Gardens in Edgbaston, which opened to members of its society on 11 June 1832. Designed by John Claudius Loudon, the 15-acre gardens have four glasshouses and more than 7,000 plants, and are run by a registered charity.
