The city

Columbia Road Flower Market

Columbia Road Flower Market is held every Sunday on a street of Victorian shops off Hackney Road in Bethnal Green, east London. Its origins go back to Columbia Market, a covered food market that Angela Burdett-Coutts established in 1869. Trading later moved to Sunday to suit the area's Jewish traders. The market declined during the Second World War and revived from the 1960s as interest in gardening grew. Traders begin setting up from 4 am, and the market runs from about 8 am into the early afternoon, selling cut flowers, bedding plants, shrubs and bulbs.

  • Angela Burdett-Coutts established Columbia Market in 1869 as a covered food market with 400 stalls.
  • The market moved to Sunday to accommodate local Jewish traders.
  • It runs every Sunday from 8 am; traders arrive from 4 am to set up.
  • The street has about sixty independent businesses alongside the stalls.
