Flowers in Brussels
Brussels has no major dedicated flower market today. Its best-known flower tradition is the Flower Carpet on the Grand-Place, first laid in 1971 and held every two years since 1986. Over a long weekend around 15 August, begonias or, in recent editions, dahlias are set out in a pattern covering more than 1,600 square metres of the square. The Grand-Place, still called the Grote Markt in Dutch, served as a market until 1959. The City of Brussels describes horticulturist Jean-Louis Van Malder, from five generations of growers, as the last gardener-flower grower to trade on the Grand-Place.
- The first Flower Carpet was made in 1971; it has been held every two years since 1986, on the weekend of 15 August.
- The 2026 edition ran from 13 to 16 August, with Japan as its theme.
- The Grand-Place served as a market until 19 November 1959.
- Jean-Louis Van Malder is described by the City of Brussels as the last gardener-flower grower on the Grand-Place.
