The city
Flowers in Hamburg
Hamburg has no public flower market; its flower trade has been wholesale. The Deichtorhallen, built between 1911 and 1914 as market halls on the site of the former Berliner Bahnhof, housed the flower wholesale market until 1984. That year it moved to a new building on Banksstraße in Hammerbrook, beside the city's Großmarkt, which sells only to trade buyers. The Deichtorhallen reopened as an art exhibition centre in 1989. Hamburg's best-known public flower setting is Planten un Blomen, Low German for 'plants and flowers', a 47-hectare inner-city park that hosted international garden shows in 1953 and 1973.
- The Deichtorhallen were built in 1911-1914 as market halls and opened as an art exhibition venue on 9 November 1989.
- In 1984 the Blumengroßmarkt moved from the Deichtorhallen to a new building on Banksstraße.
- Hamburg's Großmarkt sells only to trade buyers, not private consumers.
- Planten un Blomen ('plants and flowers' in Low German) covers 47 hectares and hosted international garden shows in 1953 and 1973.
