Flowers in Connecticut
Connecticut has no single notable flower market; its best-known flower landmark is the rose garden in Elizabeth Park, which straddles Hartford and West Hartford. Industrialist Charles Pond donated the land to Hartford in 1897, and the park was named after his wife, Elizabeth. In 1904 the city's parks superintendent, Theodore Wirth, laid out a one-acre rose garden of 190 varieties on Pond's former nursery grounds, with eight paths radiating from a central summer house and arbors of climbing roses. Expanded in 1912 and 1937 as an American Rose Society test garden, it is described as the oldest municipal rose garden in the United States and now holds about 15,000 bushes of some 800 varieties.
- Theodore Wirth created the rose garden in 1904 with 190 varieties on one acre (TCLF).
- It is described as the oldest municipally operated rose garden in the US (TCLF; ConnecticutHistory.org).
- Charles Pond donated the land to Hartford in 1897; the garden now has about 15,000 bushes and 800 varieties (ConnecticutHistory.org).
- The American Rose Society chose it as a test garden in 1912 and again in 1937, when it was expanded (TCLF).
