The city
United Flower Growers Co-operative (Burnaby)
The Vancouver area's flower trade runs through United Flower Growers, a co-operative wholesale auction on Marine Way in neighbouring Burnaby. Founded in 1963 by six local producers, it was the first Dutch-style flower and plant auction in Canada and is the largest of three such auctions in the country. Florists inspect the stock from 5:30 a.m. and bidding starts at 6, with prices starting high and falling until a buyer bids by keypad, so flowers bought that morning are in shops the same day. The city's public flower event is the Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival, founded in 2005 to commemorate the 800 cherry trees Japan gifted to the city.
- United Flower Growers was founded in 1963 by six local producers and was Canada's first Dutch-style flower and plant auction (arcabc.ca document).
- The Dutch auction on Marine Way starts at 6:00 a.m. with keypad bidding (Heritage Burnaby).
- The Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival was founded in 2005 by Linda Poole; Vancouver had over 40,000 cherry trees as of 2023 (Wikipedia).
