The city
San Francisco Flower Market (formerly the San Francisco Flower Mart)
The San Francisco Flower Market grew out of an outdoor market at Kearny and Market Streets in the late 1800s, supplied by Chinese American, Italian American and Japanese American growers. Japanese American growers founded the California Flower Market, Inc. in 1912, and in 1924 they and Italian American growers opened a covered market at Fifth and Howard Streets. In 1956 the three growers' associations moved to Sixth and Brannan Streets in SoMa, renamed the San Francisco Flower Mart in the 1990s. After the site was sold for an office development, the market moved to a new building at 901 16th Street in Potrero Hill, opening on 2 January 2025.
- The California Flower Market, Inc. was founded in 1912 by Japanese American growers; a covered market opened at 5th and Howard in 1924 (California Historical Society finding aid, OAC).
- In 1956 the three growers' associations moved to 6th and Brannan Streets; it was renamed the San Francisco Flower Mart in the 1990s (OAC).
- The market reopened at 901 16th Street, Potrero Hill, on 2 January 2025, after Kilroy Realty's redevelopment of the SoMa site (sf.funcheap.com).
