The city
Flower District (West 28th Street)
New York's Flower District is centred on West 28th Street between Sixth and Seventh Avenues in Chelsea, Manhattan. It began around a ferry dock on East 34th Street, where pushcart vendors traded flowers shipped from Long Island; in the 1890s many moved to West 28th Street to be closer to wealthier customers. Over time it grew to more than 200 wholesale and supply businesses spread between 23rd and 34th Streets, and by 1977 more flowers were traded in New York than anywhere except Amsterdam. Trading begins before dawn, around 5 a.m. Since its peak in the 1980s, redevelopment has shrunk the district to a fraction of its former size.
