The city
Çiçek Pasajı
Istanbul's best-known flower name belongs to Çiçek Pasajı, the Flower Passage on İstiklal Avenue in Beyoğlu. The arcade opened in 1876 as the Cité de Péra, designed by Kleanthis Zannos on the site of the Naum Theatre, which the Pera fire of 1870 had badly damaged. After the Russian Revolution of 1917, impoverished Russian noblewomen, including a baroness, opened flower shops there, and by the 1940s flower sellers filled the building, giving it its Turkish name. Since a 1988 restoration it has housed cafés, wine houses and restaurants instead. Today the city's flower season centres on spring tulips, with 3.58 million planted in 2026 in parks such as Emirgan Grove and Gülhane.
