Flowers in Lisbon
Lisbon has no large dedicated flower market today, but flowers are closely tied to its history. On 25 April 1974 restaurant worker Celeste Caeiro handed carnations to soldiers at Rossio, and other people followed by placing carnations in the soldiers' gun barrels. The Lisbon flower market, well stocked with carnations then in season, became a gathering point, and the coup became known as the Carnation Revolution. A flower stall still trades at the southern end of Rossio. Each June, during the festivities for Santo António, people give a manjerico, a small pot of sweet basil sold with a paper flower and a short popular verse.
