Mercado de las Flores de Tirso de Molina

Madrid's permanent flower market stands in the Plaza de Tirso de Molina, a triangular square in the Centro district, just north of Embajadores. It consists of eight identical kiosks, cubic metal structures clad in wooden slats, installed as the central element of a 2004 to 2006 redesign by Lucas Galán Lubascher and Haiku Arquitectura that turned a traffic roundabout into a pedestrian square. The kiosks trade seven days a week, and many of the vendors are immigrants, reflecting the neighbourhood. The square itself was laid out under Isabella II on the site of the demolished Convento de la Merced, and the city has since carried out works to restore the kiosks to their original state.
