Flowers in Lyon
Lyon is known for breeding roses rather than for a flower market. Rose creation in the city dates from 1830, and generations of Lyon rosiéristes have produced more than 3,000 varieties, among them Boule-de-neige by François Lacharme in 1865 and Gloria Dei by Francis Meilland in 1942. The Parc de la Tête d'Or, opened in 1857, has three rose gardens; the International Rose Garden, inaugurated in 1964, covers five hectares with about 60,000 rose bushes of more than 350 cultivars, and the park hosts an annual competition for new roses. In 2015 Lyon hosted the 17th World Convention of Rose Societies, the first held in France.
