The city
Flowers in Stockholm
Stockholm has no dedicated flower market. Flowers are traditionally sold at Hötorget, a square in the city centre known by that name since the 1640s. Its daytime market sells fruit and vegetables, and a flea market takes over on Sundays. From 1 January 1914 the city banned the sale of raw meat at Hötorget for sanitary reasons, and soon after many other foods. Gardeners, vegetable sellers and flower sellers were among the traders who stayed, while many food sellers moved into market halls. The square sits beside the Hötorgshallen food hall and Konserthuset, the concert hall.
- The name Hötorget has been known since the 1640s.
- From 1 January 1914 the sale of raw meat and later many other foods was banned at Hötorget; gardeners, vegetable sellers and flower sellers remained.
- Hötorget holds a daytime fruit and vegetable market, with a flea market on Sundays.
