The city
Hala Mirowska
Warsaw's best-known street flower market stands on the pavement in front of Hala Mirowska, a brick market hall built between 1899 and 1901 on the orders of the Russian mayor Nikolai Bibikov. It was Warsaw's largest market until the 1944 Warsaw Uprising, when it was burned but its walls survived; bullet scars are still visible. After the war it served as a bus depot before markets returned in the 1950s. A couple of dozen green tented stalls sell single stems and arranged bouquets. Women's Day on 8 March is a key date for the trade; one seller told the Warsaw Insider that tulips have replaced carnations as the usual gift.
